Job summary

Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is seeking a Technical Services Specialist to support the Collection Services Department by ordering, processing, and copy cataloging materials across branches. You will verify orders, maintain inventory, and ensure timely access to library materials.

The role requires knowledge of MARC21, Dewey Decimal, RDA, ILS systems, and strong attention to detail, with collaboration across vendors and staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing acquisitions, receiving, processing, and cataloging workflows from order to availability.
• Knowledge of library cataloging standards, copy cataloging practices, and Dewey Decimal Classification.
• Ability to apply cataloging standards to resolve workflow issues.
• Experience maintaining vendor records, FTP downloads, or automated catalog record processes.
• Strong understanding of ILS, vendor platforms, and technical services workflows.
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects, set priorities, and maintain accuracy.
• Strong written and verbal communication with vendors and staff.

Responsibilities

• Perform copy cataloging using MARC21, Dewey, RDA, AARCR2 and LC headings per policy.
• Make corrections/reclassifications for consistency and discoverability across collections.
• Organize materials by priority and complete tasks accurately and on time.
• Download and maintain FTP files and overlays for catalog records.
• Process books, CDs, DVDs, newspapers and other materials.
• Prepare, verify, and maintain records for orders and deliveries.
• Maintain acquisitions, cataloging, and order records in the ILS and vendor platforms.
• Apply cataloging standards to resolve workflow issues.
• Receive and verify materials and ensure accuracy and condition.
• Collaborate with department staff to meet workflow needs.
