Job summary

Worthington Park Library is seeking a Library Associate to assist patrons in locating materials, provide customer service, and support program delivery. The role requires attention to detail, ability to sort items alphanumerically, and proficiency with library databases and MS Office.

The position is part-time (20 hours) with a focus on Youth Services and occasional Adult Services assignment. Candidates should have a HS diploma or higher and at least one year of customer service experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or a high school diploma or GED and an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • A minimum of one year of customer service experience
  • Ability to pass alphanumeric sorting test
  • Ability to pass computer skills test

Responsibilities

Description
Purpose

Under general supervision, the Library Associate assists patrons in locating library materials using resources in various formats, and performs related duties.

Essential Position Functions
  • Proactively provides customer service
  • Interviews, researches, and answers questions from patrons
  • Recommends materials based on patrons' interest
  • Supports Librarians in developing and maintaining the collection, as directed
  • Maintains periodical collections, including associated paperwork, tracking claims, routing, filing, labeling, stamping and weeding out-of-date materials, as assigned
  • Assists with planning, coordination and presentation of library programs, storytimes and special events, as assigned
  • Performs duties of Storytime Associate and Circulation Assistant, as needed
Requirements
Education, Training and/or Experiences
  • Bachelor's degree or a high school diploma or GED and an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, and
  • A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience; and
  • Ability to pass alphanumeric sorting test; and
  • Ability to pass computer skills test
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
  • Proficient in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
  • Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order
  • Superior working knowledge of traditional and electronic resources including web sites and databases; excellent online searching skills
  • Ability to deliver programs and speak before groups
  • Ability to retain and follow circulation policies and procedures
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit and use computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment, daily
  • Ability to lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds, daily
  • Ability to push book trucks with up to 150 pounds of materials on them, daily
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, daily
  • Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting, daily
  • Travel by automobile is required occasionally
Summary

This position will also be assigned to work in Adult Services on a regular basis.

Schedule
  • Sunday (every 3rd): 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • Monday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Tuesday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Thursday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Friday: OFF
  • Saturday: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
