Job summary

Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries, Worthington Park Library location, seeks a Library Associate for 20 hours weekly in a part-time, non-exempt union role. Primary duties include helping patrons locate materials across formats, assisting with technology, and supporting program planning.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree or GED and has at least one year of customer service experience, with strong MS Office skills and ILS familiarity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or a high school diploma or GED and an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience; ability to pass alphanumeric sorting test; ability to pass computer skills test.
  • Proficient in Integrated Library System (ILS); able to handle confidential information with good judgment.
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to organize items in alphanumeric/subject order; proficient with MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively provides customer service to library patrons.
  • Interviews, researches, and answers questions from patrons.
  • Recommends materials based on patrons’ interests.
  • Supports librarians in developing and maintaining the collection as directed.
  • Maintains periodical collections and related paperwork; tracks claims and weeding.
  • Assists patrons with basic troubleshooting of software, OS, browsers, and devices.
  • Assists with planning and presenting library programs, storytimes, and events.
  • Performs duties of Storytime Associate and Circulation Assistant as needed.

Purpose
Under general supervision, the Library Associate assists patrons in locating library materials using resources in various formats, and performs related duties.

Essential Position Functions
  • Proactively provides customer service
  • Interviews, researches, and answers questions from patrons
  • Recommends materials based on patrons’ interest
  • Supports Librarians in developing and maintaining the collection, as directed
  • Maintains periodical collections, including associated paperwork, tracking claims, routing, filing, labeling, stamping and weeding out-of-date materials, as assigned
  • Assists patrons with basic troubleshooting of common software products, operating systems, browsers and other technologies associated with library services (including handheld devices, e-readers, laptops, tablets, etc.)
  • Assists with planning, coordination and presentation of library programs, storytimes and special events, as assigned
  • Performs duties of Storytime Associate and Circulation Assistant, as needed
Required Experience

Education, Training and/or Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree or a high school diploma or GED and an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, and
  • A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience; and
  • Ability to pass alphanumeric sorting test; and
  • Ability to pass computer skills test
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics
  • Proficient in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
  • Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order
  • Superior working knowledge of traditional and electronic resources including web sites and databases; excellent online searching skills
  • Ability to deliver programs and speak before groups
  • Ability to retain and follow circulation policies and procedures
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit and use computer for extended periods and operate standard office equipment, daily
  • Ability to lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds, daily
  • Ability to push book trucks with up to 150 pounds of materials on them, daily
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, daily
  • Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting, daily
  • Travel by automobile is required occasionally

This position will also be assigned to work in Adult Services on a regular basis.

  • Sunday (every 3rd): 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • Monday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Tuesday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Wednesday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Thursday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Friday: OFF
  • Saturday: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
