Job summary

Harnett County Public Library System in Lillington is seeking a part-time Library Clerk to perform circulation duties and provide information services using modern library technologies. The role requires up to 29 hours per week with shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends at the Main Library and occasional other branches in Harnett County.

The position emphasizes excellent customer service, helping patrons with technology, and assisting with programs and displays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; customer service experience preferred.
• No experience required but some library or customer service experience preferred.
• Equivalent education and/or experience considered.
• Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Notary Public within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Responds to routine inquiries and refers patrons to appropriate sources within the library or online materials.
• Performs circulation duties: registering new patrons, checking items in/out, collecting overdue fines and fees, basic transactions, reserving materials, search catalog, manage patron accounts, troubleshoot accounts.
• Sorts books and other items and returns them to shelves or designated areas.
• Locates library materials for patrons (books, periodicals, DVDs, audiobooks).
• Instructs patrons on accessing online and digital materials, including e-books and access points.
• Inspects returned books and notes repair needs.
• Assists patrons with office equipment (fax, copier, computer).
• Selects substitute titles when requested; considers genre, age level, educational depth.
• Retrieves items from stacks by hand or pushcarts.
• Generates holds list and locates items for holds and requests.
• Performs routine cleaning and safety duties and end-of-day checks.
• Assists with displays and programs (adult outreach, children's dept., local history).
• Helps patrons with self-checkout terminals and coin machines.
• Performs shelf reading, identifies missing/lost items, and clarifies catalog questions.
• Balances cash drawer and prepares daily deposits.
• Performs opening/closing duties.
• Works as part of a team focused on patron experience and community needs.
• Seasonal weekends rotation is required.
