The City of Corpus Christi library is seeking a Library Assistant to join the front line of customer service at the Corpus Christi Public Library. This part-time role supports patrons at the service desk, assists with materials processing, and helps users with computers and research.

The successful candidate will have an Associate degree or a two-year certificate and at least two years of experience, plus strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Description
Overview

The Library Assistant is the frontline for library services and requires delivery of excellence customer service and requires strong interpersonal skills. This position performs a variety of library related tasks such as assisting patrons at the public service desk, demonstrates information literacy, process library materials, copy cataloging, assist with computer related tasks and new technologies integrability loan requests and process. The Library Assistant position exists to provide Corpus Christi residents library services and resources.

Responsibilities
  • Communicates effectively and applies satisfactory customer service skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Encourages patrons to comply with established policies, must be able to understand and explain policies and procedures in a firm and tactful manner
  • Resolves patron complaints related to fines or fees
  • Uses Integrated Library System when checking materials in and out to patrons, evaluate patrons records and collect payments as needed
  • Requires knowledge of library resources (print and electronic) and readers advisory when assisting and instructing patrons
  • Explains and performs intra and interlibrary loan procedures, document delivery, resource sharing, reserves and other information retrieval options
  • Reports any necessary building maintenance issues and contacting Police when patrons are disruptive and refuse to comply with policies
  • Performs all tasks related to opening and closing procedures
  • Completes monthly reports, gathers, and submits statistical data as required for administration
  • Prepares desk schedules, trains staff on daily operations including use of Integrated Library System, copy cataloging and tasks common to a library environment, oversee volunteers
  • Delivers library programs such as craft and book clubs
  • Provides reference assistance with special local history collections in person, by telephone, postal mail, email and faxes
  • Assist patrons with equipment including digital microfilm reader/scanner and monitoring this equipment
  • Utilizes software common to a library environment creates, maintains, and inputs special collections inventory data into database for access on library’s website
  • Performs functions related to processing purchased materials: unpacking verifying invoices and contracting vendors when shipments are incorrect
  • Requires searching bibliographic databases (OCLC) and accurately matching bibliography records to input record into Integrated Library System
  • Sorts and distributes mail, performs minor book repairs, re-assigns materials upon request, prepares newspapers and serials for public area
  • Keeps up with continuously changing technology related to library environment
  • Performs basic maintenance of computers, printers and copying machines, digital microfilm/reader scanner, PC scanners and other equipment
  • Promotes library programs to the community in coordination with marketing efforts, creating and designing promotional material using assigned software
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates Degree (AA/AS) or 2-year Technical Certificate

Basis of Rating
