Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Works different service desks as assigned and maintains a friendly, knowledgeable impression of the library and College.
  • Checks out and checks in library materials and study rooms.
  • Shelves books and serials; assists in receiving and processing materials.
  • Supports collection maintenance activities and mail room duties as needed.
  • Assists with inventory, fines collection, and gate count readings.
  • Ensures cleanliness of patron work areas, shelves, desks, and workspaces.
  • Unlocks library entrances and assists with security procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Department: Library Public Services

The Library Clerk provides exceptional customer service to library patrons and facilitates utilization of library resources.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Works different services desks as assigned and provides a positive, friendly, and knowledgeable impression of the library and the College.
  • Checks out and checks in library materials and study rooms.
  • Shelves books, serials, etc.
  • Assists in receiving and processing library materials.
  • Assists with collection maintenance activities.
  • Pick-up mail from Mail Room, receives, sorts, and routes department mail. Assists with annual inventory. Collects fines.
  • Answers directional questions.
  • Maintains cleanliness of patron work areas, library shelves, service desks, and personal workspaces.
  • Assists collecting and submitting gate count readings.
  • Assists unlocking and securing library entrances.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; college certificate or 30 college hours, preferred.
  • Recent library experience, preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong background in computers and office automation, including Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and knowledge of the Windows environment.
  • Ability to perform basic office skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy. In addition, subject to federal background check.
Physical Requirements
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
  • Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Sitting and standing particularly for sustained periods of time. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
