Job summary

Merlin Entertainments is seeking a Model Maintenance Technician to build, install, repair and remove LEGO models for Miniland and park attractions. This guest-facing role requires daily guest interactions and adherence to safety and design briefs.

The ideal candidate has hands-on design experience, familiarity with model production, reading briefs, and the ability to teach techniques in a classroom setting. Willingness to travel regionally is a plus.

Qualifications

• Hands-on design, maker or craft background with ability to troubleshoot LEGO models.
• Ability to read attraction briefs and drawings and follow briefs.
• Experience with model production and maintenance for Miniland or park models preferred.
• Comfortable reading and evaluating reports and correspondence.

Responsibilities

• Keep guests, employees, and models safe as the top priority.
• Create and repair LEGO models using the LEGO library for guest enjoyment.
• Identify models needing repair or redesign during daily walkthroughs.
• Respond to duty manager calls to expeditiously repair models for safety.
• Escalate issues to Model Shop Manager when unresolved before park opening.
• Follow design briefs from internal customers for attraction needs.
• Inspect work areas for safety and cleanliness; maintain tools and equipment.
• Operate basic machines like drills, blowers, grinders and belt sanders.
• Keep tools and equipment in good working order and updated with training.
• Attend supplemental training to stay current with techniques.
• Maintain good relationships with Model Shop and other departments’ MCs.
• Follow LEGOLAND employee handbook and safety policies.
• Remain calm under pressure or in emergencies.
• Interact with guests to teach building techniques in classrooms.
• Provide a fun and inclusive environment in guest interactions.
• Demonstrate experience in 3D design or spatial concepts and assist in custom model development.

Position Title: Model Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Model Shop Manager

Department: Technical Services

Job Classification: Non-exempt

Position Summary: Must be able to build, install, repair, and remove LEGO models for a variety of LEGOLAND resort attractions including Miniland models such as Minilanders, cars, small buildings, as well as sculpted Parkwide models.This is a guest facing position and would require guest interactions on a regular, day to day, basis.

Qualifications & Experience

Scope and Responsibilities:

• 1. Keeps safety of guests, employees, and LEGO models the #1 priority.
• 2. Works with the LEGO library of elements to create and repair fun and exciting LEGO models for guests to enjoy.
• 3. Recognizes models in situ on daily walkthrough that need repair, replacing, or redesign.
• 4. Responds to duty manager and radio calls during operational hours, expediting repairs to ensure guest and fellow Model Citizens’ safety and comfort at all times.
• 5. Brings any LEGO model issues that cannot be resolved/repaired for park opening to Model Shop Manager’s attention.
• 6. Follows design brief from internal customers to meet attraction needs.
• 7. Ensures the security and safety of all models by inspecting for safety hazards, following the preventative maintenance program established by Animation team, including any emergency repairs as required to keep down time to an acceptable minimum in all areas of attractions and facilities.
• 8. Ensures that all model work areas are kept clean and organized at all times.
• 9. Operates some basic machine tools, such as drills, blowers, grinding wheel, and belt sander.
• 10. Keep tools, machines, and all other company equipment in good working order.
• 11. Keeps informed and updated on modern techniques and technical methods by attending supplemental training courses, trips, seminars, conventions, etc.
• 12. Maintains good working relationship with fellow Model Shop, Technical Services, and other departments’ MCs.
• 13. Follows LEGOLAND-established employee handbook and safety policies at all times.
• 14. Must be able to react calmly and rationally under pressure or in an emergency.
• 15. Ability to work with guests to teach and explain building techniques in a classroom setting.
• 16. Must be comfortable with talking to and interacting with guests on a regular basis all while providing a fun and inclusive environment.
• 17. Demonstrated experience in 3D design, spatial modelling, or creative concept design, with the ability to assist in custom model development as site or project needs dictate.

Background and Experience:

Requires experience in a hands-on design, maker or craft field, with a basic understanding of the practices, tools, and equipment used to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain LEGO models. Ability to read and evaluate attraction briefs, reports and correspondence. Must be able to read drawings and understand briefs. Ideal candidate preferably has a working knowledge of all phases of model production and maintenance for Miniland and sculpted Parkwide models. A general of knowledge LEGO elements is required; an in-depth understanding is preferred. Ability to observe and remember details, and to follow Model Shop Manager’s directions effectively. Preferably a self-driven, proactive employee.

Professional LEGO model shop experience is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

CAD or LEGO software experience is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

Must be willing to work flexible hours, rotating schedules to include evenings, weekends and holidays to support park operations.

Must have valid driver’s license and safe driving record. Reviewed every 6 months.

Must be willing to travel locally and regionally to conduct business, and occasional travel within the U.S.
