Job summary

The Washington State Legislature in Olympia, WA, is seeking a Legislative Assistant to Senator Claudia Kauffman. This full-time, year-round position will support a high-performing office, coordinating calendar, events, and constituent services while engaging with lawmakers and stakeholders.

The role requires a bachelor's degree and at least one year of related experience, with extensive duties during sessions and flexible hours.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain productive working relationships with Senators, staff, lobbyists, and constituents.
  • Well-developed project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate legislative computer systems and video conferencing software.
  • Willingness to learn the Washington State Legislature structure and public records requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of Senator Kauffman's office.
  • Serve as liaison between the Senator and legislators, staff, lobbyists, agencies, and constituents.
  • Field questions from the public regarding legislation and the Senator's stance on issues.
  • Draft talking points, press releases, mailings, and plan district media strategies.
  • Draft and/or review responses to legislative correspondence; exercise independent judgement.
  • Assist constituents in interactions with state agencies.
  • Meet with constituents, lobbyists, and other parties on behalf of the Senator.
  • Organize in-person and virtual legislative events.
  • Monitor district-specific issues and concerns.
  • Maintain the Senator’s legislative calendar and arrange travel details.
  • Oversee the office budget and reimbursements.
  • Manage and track budget requests during the budget process.
  • Recruit session staff and train to comply with procedures.
  • Supervise temporary staff and interns during sessions.
  • Oversee progression of bills and amendments.
  • Coordinate communication with stakeholders on legislation.
  • Organize committee testimony for prime sponsor bills.
  • Collaborate with caucus policy staff and committee services staff.
  • Maintain and preserve records of the office.
