Job summary

State of Washington seeks a Legislative Assistant to Senator Leonard Christian in Olympia. The role advances policy priorities, liaises with stakeholders, and manages the Senator’s calendar and budget. It requires in‑district residency, in‑session in Olympia, and remote work during interim.

The LA drafts communications, coordinates events, and supports constituents with state agencies. Relocation compensation is available for qualified staff living far from Olympia; long and irregular hours

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree AND one year of related work experience OR an equivalent combination.
  • Ability to work in-person in Olympia during the session and remote in-state during interim.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and discretion for public records.

Responsibilities

  • Attend in-district meetings with the Senator and on the Senator’s behalf when in session.
  • Serve as liaison between the Senator and legislators, staff, lobbyists, agencies, and constituents.
  • Field questions from the public regarding legislation and the Senator’s stance.
  • Draft talking points, press releases, mailings, and plan district media strategies.
  • Draft and review responses to legislative correspondence with independent judgement.
  • Assist constituents in interactions with state agencies.
  • Meet with constituents, lobbyists, and other parties on behalf of the Senator.
  • Organize in-person and virtual legislative events.
  • Maintain the Senator’s calendar and arrange travel details.
  • Oversee the office budget and submit travel/reimbursement requests.
  • Manage budget requests throughout the budget process.
  • Recruit session staff and train to comply with procedures and rules.
  • Supervise temporary staff and interns during session.
  • Oversee progression of bills and amendments; coordinate stakeholder communication.
  • Organize committee testimony for prime sponsor bills.
  • Collaborate with policy staff to implement goals and preserve records.
  • Conduct public records searches as needed.
