Job summary

Washington State Senate seeks a Legislative Assistant for Senator Leonard Christian. The role supports daily office operations, constituent relations, and policy development from Olympia, WA, with in-district residence required and relocation if needed for the session.

The LA will draft talking points, coordinate events, manage schedules, and assist with budget and staff supervision during the session. This is a full-time exempt position with remote work options when not in session.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and one year of related work experience OR an equivalent combination.
  • Must reside in-district and be willing to relocate to Olympia for the legislative session.
  • Remote work is supported when Legislature is not in session, but the LA should be based in-district.
  • Long and irregular hours during the legislative session.
  • Full-time exempt from civil service.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of Senator Christian’s office.
  • Attend in-district meetings with the Senator and on the Senator’s behalf when the legislature is not in session.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Senator and staff, lobbyists, agencies, local/federal governments, and constituents.
  • Field questions from the public regarding legislation and the Senator’s stance on issues.
  • Collaborate on drafting talking points, press releases, mailings, and planning district media strategies.
  • Draft and/or review responses to legislative correspondence and exercise independent judgement.
  • Assist constituents in interactions with state agencies.
  • Meet with constituents, lobbyists, and other parties on behalf of the Senator.
  • Organize in-person and virtual legislative events.
  • Maintain the Senator’s calendar and arrange travel details.
  • Oversee the office budget and submit travel and reimbursement requests.
  • Recruit session staff and train them on procedures and Senate rules.
  • Supervise temporary staff and interns during the legislative session.
  • Oversee progression of bills and amendments through the legislative process.
  • Coordinate communication with stakeholders in legislation creation and progression.
  • Organize committee testimony for prime sponsor bills.
  • Collaborate with caucus policy staff and non-partisan staff to implement policy goals.
  • Maintain and preserve records; conduct public records searches as needed.
