Job summary

State of Colorado, Department of Corrections, seeks a Legal Assistant I to support adult offender access to legal materials, maintain law libraries, and provide notary services and research assistance. The role includes supervising offender clerks and ensuring secure library operations within a penal setting.

Minimum qualifications require a paralegal certificate with substitutions available for related experience.

Qualifications

• Paralegal certificate obtained through ABA-approved program or accredited institution. Copies must be attached to your application to receive credit.
• Two years of paralegal work experience with legal research, drafting documents, and data gathering can substitute for the certificate.
• Requires a paralegal certificate within 9 months of hire; Juris Doctorate may substitute for the certificate.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal research assistance to offenders and staff to locate proper legal authority.
• Monitor and manage offender legal access computers and word processing programs.
• Log and deliver photocopied loan materials and enter data for monthly reports.
• Supervise offender clerks and ensure security of law libraries across facilities.
