The Department of Sociology offers a BA in Sociology, a BA in Criminology and Justice Studies (CJS), and an MA in Public Sociology. Both BA degrees in our Department include a rigorous core of theory and methods, service learning, writing intensive courses, professional development seminar, and two capstone options. About two-thirds of the students in our programs identify as students of color, first-generation college students, and/or Pell Grant recipients. As a department we work to address social justice at the local, regional and global level. Our goal is to foster a desire and respect for social change amongst our students and our local community.
The BA in Sociology requires major electives in Inequalities and Change, Environment, and Communities and Identity. The CJS major elective areas include: Inequalities, Identities, and Crime; Law; Justice and Policy; and Social Research and Action. Courses offered by the department include Migration and the Global Economy, Forests and Culture, Environmental Crime, Drugs and Society, Altruism and Compassion, Community Organizing, Policing Bodies, and Popular Culture.
M.A./M.S. or equivalent in the appropriate field, as well as documented evidence of course-related content expertise is required. Preference will be given to candidates with documented successful teaching experience at the college level within the last three years.
For candidates applying to teach graduate level courses, at least 30 units of coursework toward PhD must be completed in addition to a M.A./M.S. or equivalent in the appropriate field. Evidence of effectiveness and inclusive pedagogy in teaching and mentoring low-income, first-generation, and students of color. Evidence of recent teaching experience (within the last 2-3 years) working with freshmen as they transition from high school to college and in helping them develop foundational academic skills (time management, reading strategies, writing, test preparation, & classroom expectations).
In all cases, preference will be given to candidates with an earned doctoral degree in a relevant field.
