Responsibilities

  • Provides supervisory training on employee health, safety, OJI, FML, and ADA.
  • Manages the on-the-job injury program with third-party administrator, supervisors, and employees.
  • Coordinates wellness activities and vaccinations with health services as applicable and promotes health initiatives.
  • Evaluates employee health needs and supports health-related programs and screenings.
  • Supports new employee orientations with wellness, health and safety sessions.
  • Maintains HIPAA compliance for confidential information.
  • Travels to USA buildings/campuses for meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Maintains databases using Excel and extracts reports from Banner.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and four years of directly related experience in a human resources or related setting. Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills are required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


Preferred Qualifications


Experience in human resources is preferred. Experience in leave administration and/or a health-related field with knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.


Job Description Summary


The University of South Alabama’s department of Human Resources is seeking to hire a Leave and Accommodations Specialist.


Essential Functions


These are the job duties required of the position.



  • Manages all aspects of the leave of absence program to include Family Medical Leave, personal leave of absence, on-the-job injury leave of absence, military leave and administrative leave.

  • Administers ADA accommodation assessments; monitors implementation of workplace accommodations, and maintains ADA data in the Banner HR/Payroll System.

  • Facilitates and presents supervisory training related to employee health and safety, OJI , FML , and ADA .

  • Administers the o-the-job injury program and works directly with the third party administrator, supervisors, and employees.

  • Interacts with third party wellness providers to promote and encourage employee participation in wellness initiatives; plans, implements and coordinates activities and projects related to workplace wellness, disease prevention and health lifestyle programs; promotes health related monthly national observances through promotions, newsletters, and other sources.

  • Works closely with Employee or Student Health, to coordinate vaccinations for employees, as applicable; handles cost expense transfer associated with the dispensation of vaccines.

  • Evaluates employee health needs and implements health activities such as weight loss programs, smoking cessation programs, and employee health screenings.

  • Participates in new employee orientations, presenting wellness, health and safety related sessions.

  • Follows HIPAA compliance regulations to include appropriate handling of confidential information.

  • Travels to various USA buildings and/or campuses as needed to attend meetings, conduct or facilitate training programs, and makes presentations.

  • Conducts special projects and surveys as assigned.

  • Maintains various databases using Excel, and extracts reports using Banner.

  • Serves on various committees as assigned.

  • Serves as liaison between other applicable General Division and USA Health offices, and Human Resources in regards to implementing a response when a local, state, or national medical emergency has been declared, including but not limited to an epidemic or pandemic.

  • Regular and prompt attendance.

  • Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.

  • Related duties as required.
