Job summary

Acorn Training Ltd. in Burton is seeking a Learning Mentor for a 20‑hour per week, hybrid role. You will guide learners through their programmes, conduct initial assessments, and help them stay motivated and on track to achieve their learning goals.

You will work with curriculum teams to identify needs, maintain accurate records, and support learners individually or in small groups while fostering independent learning and resilience.

Qualifications

  • Level 2/3 Learning Support or mentoring qualification is essential.
  • GCSE English and Maths at grade A*-C is required.
  • L3 teaching qualification (PTLLS, AET etc) is essential.
  • Full driving licence is essential.
  • L4 subject-specific qualification is desirable.
  • L5 teaching qualification (DTLLS, LST) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and support to learners across learning journeys.
  • Conduct learning support interviews and initial assessments.
  • Identify learners at risk and plan appropriate support.
  • Maintain accurate records and update individual learning plans.
  • Support learners 1:1, in small groups, or in larger classes.
  • Encourage independent learning and self-reliance.
  • Offer off-site support for apprenticeships or bespoke programmes.
  • Assist with exam adjustments referrals for ALS learners.
  • Facilitate weekly and annual reviews for EHCP learners.

Learning Mentor - Burton - 20 hours per week

Employment Type: Permanent - Part Time

Compensation: £13,330 - £14,400 / year

Description

To provide guidance and support to learners throughout their learning journey, playing a crucial role in helping them achieve their learning goals, stay motivated, and overcome any obstacles they may face during their programme.

Key Responsibilities
  • Working with curriculum delivery teams to provide support related information which will help ensure learners are on appropriate programmes of learning based on their individual learning need.
  • Facilitating learning support interviews and initial assessment/Cognassist activities following referral by curriculum colleagues, identifying learning support needs and evaluating support requirements.
  • Working with curriculum delivery teams to identify learners that may become or are ‘at risk’ of not achieving.
  • Producing accurate records of learning support activities and ensuring appropriate individual learning support plans and strategies are generated, monitored, and updated in a timely manner.
  • Providing learning support for learners on a 1:1 basis, in small groups and to individuals within large groups in classroom settings as required.
  • Providing opportunities for learners to experience independent learning and encourage them where possible to become self-reliant.
  • Providing ‘off-site’ support for learners participating in apprenticeships, work placements or bespoke programmes where required.
  • Support the ALS manager with the referral process of exam adjustments for ALS learners within caseloads.
  • Facilitating 12 weekly and annual reviews for learners with EHCPs in a timely manner.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Qualifications and Specific Training

  • Level 2/3 Learning Support or mentoring/coaching qualification (essential)
  • GCSE grade A*-C (or equivalent) in English and maths (essential)
  • L3 teaching qualification (PTLLS, AET etc) (essential)
  • Full driving licence (essential)
  • L4 subject specific qualification (desirable)
  • L5 teaching qualification or above (DTLLS, LST etc) (desirable)

Experience

  • Previous experience in a mentoring, coaching, or counselling role, within adult education (essential)
  • Experience in working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds and supporting their individual needs (essential)
  • Experience in maintaining accurate records, completing administrative tasks, and managing confidential information (essential)
  • Familiarity with conducting assessments, monitoring learner progress, and providing constructive feedback (essential)
  • Experience of collaborating with other professionals, such as trainers, tutors, and support staff (essential)
  • Experience assessing and working with SPLD (desirable)
  • Previous experience of managing learners with challenging behaviours (desirable)

Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of learner Safeguarding and Welfare requirements (essential)
  • Knowledge of various learning styles and strategies to support diverse learners (essential)
  • Familiarity with relevant policies and procedures related to learner support and safeguarding (essential)
  • Understanding of educational systems, learning theories, and principles of effective mentoring (desirable)
