Job description

The Lead Volunteer supports Samish staff by coordinating volunteer activity, monitoring item accuracy, and ensuring a smooth, organized flow throughout the distribution.

Prep (30 minutes)

• Arrive early to review the day's distribution plan with staff.
• Assign volunteers to stations (check-in, packing, carry-out, table restock).
• Double-check table setup and counts.

Distribution (2 hours)

• Ensure clipboard check-off is happening consistently and clearly.
• Monitor food quantities and alert staff if shortages or surpluses arise.
• Maintain an orderly flow through the atrium.
• Provide assistance with heavy or awkward boxes when needed.

Cleanup (30 minutes)

• Delegate end‑of‑shift cleanup tasks to volunteers.
• Ensure all boxes are broken down and recyclables handled appropriately.
• Help staff reset the atrium area for normal use.

Preferred Skills & Qualities

• Strong communication and leadership skills.
• Confident giving direction and answering volunteer questions.
• Reliable, punctual, and organized.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs safely.

Required Qualifications

• Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity.
• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, OR ability to request accommodation for non‑lifting duties.
• Must follow program safety and confidentiality expectations.
• Willingness to work respectfully with Elders, families, and staff.

Preferred (Especially for Lead Role)

• Comfort with checklists and basic count verification.
• Ability to stay calm and organized in a busy environment.
