Job summary

SEIU Local 221 is seeking an Organizing Coordinator to lead the Organizing Department’s day-to-day operations, guide staff and members, and execute campaigns aligned with the Local’s priorities. You will develop internal organizing, bargaining, training, and data tracking while reporting to the Chief of Staff and collaborating across departments.

Qualifications

  • Five years prior experience working full-time as a union organizer and/or community organizer responsible for running campaigns and recruiting members, leading bargaining with employers and/or supervising multiple staff, assignments, and projects.
  • Prior experience within a labor organization bargaining contracts and representing workers with the employer.
  • Experienced in internal organizing methods and practices, including campaign planning, leadership, messaging, and actions.
  • Experienced in representation methods and practices, such as drafting contract language, engaging with management, filing information requests, and filing charges.
  • Knowledge of Labor Laws and agencies such as Meyers-Milias Brown Act, NLRA, PERB and NLRB.
  • Commitment to economic and social justice, including anti-racist and anti-sexist organizing strategies.
  • Experience in employee supervision, coaching, training and performance management.
  • Ability to develop plans, track progress, and report outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage internal organizing campaigns – including membership drives and issue campaigns – supporting Local priorities.
  • Serve as Lead Negotiator and campaign strategist for multiple contracts and meet-and-confer processes, training staff to bargain.
  • Plan, lead, and support actions of all sizes, including leafletting, unity breaks, rallies, informational pickets, and strikes.
  • Supervise all Organizing staff to reach benchmarks and goals.
  • Conduct regular Organizing Team meetings and one-on-one reviews to plan work assignments.
  • Support Chief of Staff in recruiting, hiring, and evaluating staff; develop individualized professional development plans.
  • Issue non-disciplinary corrective action and, when needed, disciplinary action with Chief of Staff approval.
  • Recruit and develop job stewards, member leaders, and worksite committees.
  • Ensure staff involve rank-and-file members in developing organizing strategies and tactics.
  • Develop anti-racist and anti-sexist organizing strategies and tactics.
  • Maintain relationships with community organizations, political allies, and other unions; seek common bargaining demands.
  • Represent SEIU Local 221 professionally in meetings with SEIU bodies and elected officials.
  • Train staff to work collectively and individually, including communications with employers and filing charges as needed.
  • Manage route coverage, staff absences, and problem-solving while training staff to do the same.
