Job summary

SEIU Local 521 seeks an Internal Organizer to work with members across multiple jurisdictions. The role emphasizes recruitment, training, and leadership development, with campaigns on budget issues, contracts, safety, and related topics.

The organizer will help craft communications and support negotiation processes. Candidates should have strong written/spoken English, a commitment to social and economic justice, and the ability to coordinate plans across diverse groups.

Qualifications

• Willingness to travel within the local jurisdiction for assignments.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Strong commitment to social and economic justice and organizing the unorganized.
• At least one year of external organizing experience or equivalent.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; good listening.
• Ability to create and execute detailed organizing plans.
• Ability to work with diverse worker groups; build rapport.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Identify, recruit, train, and develop stewards, officers, and leaders.
• Lead campaigns and assist in worksite plans on issues like budget, contracts, safety.
• Create or assist in member communication systems; write/edit leaflets and newsletters.
• Negotiate or assist in contract negotiations from proposals to strike prep.
• Monitor stewards/officers on representational duties and appeals.
• Meet timelines and procedures related to labor contracts and bylaws.
• Encourage participation in political and lobbying activities.
• Lead residual organizing campaigns and recruit members.
• Supervise staff or community-based committees; act as spokesperson.
