Johnston's Surveying in Central Florida is seeking a Crew Chief to lead field crews of Survey Techs on boundary, topographic, and construction staking surveys. You will be the senior on-site, running the crew, owning data quality, and making field calls that a tech isn't yet trusted to make.

This leadership role offers a clear path to Party Chief, with responsibility for equipment, safety, and client coordination.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of field surveying experience with demonstrated crew leadership.
• Strong command of GPS/GNSS, robotic total stations, and data collection software (Trimble, Carlson, or similar).
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues in the field without office support.
• Full-day capability standing, walking uneven terrain, and lifting/carrying up to 40 lbs of equipment.
• Comfortable directing others and owning outcomes for the crew.
• Understands field accuracy is foundational to downstream work.

Responsibilities

• Crew Leadership: Direct a crew of 1-2 Survey Techs and assign tasks to keep the crew productive.
• Field Judgment: Make on-the-ground calls for methodology, boundary interpretation, and re-shoot decisions.
• Equipment Ownership: Operate and maintain GPS/GNSS units, robotic total stations, and data collectors; ensure equipment is calibrated.
• Quality Control: Review field data before leaving the site to avoid callbacks.
• Training: Develop Survey Techs on equipment use, field technique, and safety habits.
• Client & Site Coordination: Be the on-site contact for clients and contractors; communicate delays or scope changes to office.
• Safety: Enforce field safety standards and ensure crew compliance.
