Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing is seeking a Senior Relay Technician to lead advanced protection testing and commissioning for utility substations in the New London region. You will oversee field activities, guide crews through outages, and ensure safety and reliability in protection schemes from 5kV to 500kV.

The role requires hands-on testing expertise, NETA-related credentials or a clear path toward them, and strong collaboration with utility customers and project managers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV).
• Strong knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Solid understanding of utility safety rules, energized work practices, and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Ability to interpret protection diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring and logic drawings.
• Valid driver’s license; ability to travel outdoors and lift up to 70 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety briefings and reinforce a Safety First culture on site.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (Distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure, bus protection).
• Verify control circuits for transformers, capacitor banks, and reactors.
• Support outage planning, switching coordination, energization, and restoration.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports and field documentation.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians; coordinate with project managers and customers.
• Participate in job walks, estimating, and customer technical discussions.
