Job summary

WSP is seeking a Substation Lead Electrical Engineer (Station Physical) for its Ft. Mill, South Carolina office to support the Power & Energy Substation Team on utility-scale projects.

You will lead design activities, conduct advanced electrical calculations, and ensure compliance with industry standards. The role requires 7–10 years of relevant experience, a BS in Electrical Engineering, and proven leadership in complex substation design and construction.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at utilities, industrial, or commercial scale.
• Proficient with substation Physical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and project work-related issues for 12 kV to 345 kV substations.
• Extensive knowledge of substation Physical design.
• Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction, including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects.
• Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of medium-to-high voltage substations, applying applicable regulations and policies.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide high level technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, design, development, and construction support of utility-scale substations (12 kV–345 kV).
• Review electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, one-line diagrams, and switchyard layouts.
• Develop and review specifications and cost estimates; prepare construction phasing plans and layout updates.
• Oversee cross-discipline teams to manage budgets, hours, expenses, and QA/QC.
• Prepare data visualizations, tables, charts, and reports for complex data interpretation.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations with findings and recommendations.
• Interact with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
• Stay current with substation physical engineering techniques and practices.
• Travel as required by project needs.
