Job summary

New Relic is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for the Data Platform team, owning the ingest pathway into NRDB, New Relic’s telemetry datastore. You will guide architecture, collaborate with product and partner teams, and lead engineers to resolve high‑throughput distributed systems challenges.

You’ll stay hands‑on with production code, coach teammates, and ensure robust CI/CD, observability, and incident responsiveness across a Kubernetes‑managed stack using Kafka.

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a technical lead role.
• Deep fluency in Java or a comparable OOP language, with ability to ramp quickly across team languages.
• Experience running stateful distributed services in production under variable load and guiding incident remediation.
• Experience leading architecture and design reviews for complex systems.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and CI/CD tooling and container orchestration.
• Experience with data modeling and query optimization at scale.
• Strong mentoring and feedback skills to improve team output.
• Effective written and verbal communication for non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Weigh tradeoffs between performance, maintainability, and cost when making architecture calls for ingest systems.
• Scope, estimate, and own delivery of complex projects from design to GA.
• Evaluate and introduce new tools and patterns, including LLM-assisted development where appropriate.
• Stay hands-on by writing and shipping production code.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and technical feedback.
• Communicate technical risk and tradeoffs to stakeholders.
• Own operational health of systems: CI/CD, observability, and incident response.
• Identify gaps in tools or coverage and ensure gaps are closed.
