Job Description

The Lead American Sign Language Interpreter plays a vital role in advancing equitable access to educational opportunities by providing impartial and accurate American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for students and NHCC employees who are deaf or hard of hearing. This position may also serve other constituents when needed. This position also leads efforts to promote equity and inclusion by advancing best practices that support, empower, and enhance access for the Deaf & Hard of hearing community at NHCC, while providing administrative support and customer service support, contributing to and collaboration on departmental projects, and managing technologies that enhance departmental operations and service delivery.

Salary Range: $27.83 - $40.63 per hour

Minimum Qualifications

Hold current interpreter or transliterator certificates awarded by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or the general level interpreter proficiency certificate awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level III or higher (IV or V), or a comparable state certification from the commissioner of education and satisfactorily complete an interpreter/transliterator training program affiliated with an accredited educational institution; or hold a certified deaf interpreter certification issued by RID. At least two years of experience as a sign language interpreter. Proven experience and processing of auditory and visual information and formulation of an accurate interpretation of another’s intent, spirit, and sophistication of language. Current working knowledge and understanding of computer software used as assistive technology (e.g. MS Office applications, Read & Write Gold, Adobe Pro, JAWS, etc.) The ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to identify and accommodate Deaf Hard of Hearing individuals’ language preferences and comprehension level, including attention to dialect. The ability to work within a team; be amenable to cross-training; and build good working relationships with other staff, faculty, students, and the general public. Physical Requirements Ability to communicate in spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL), including the ability to accurately receive, process, and convey information between both languages. The position requires frequent movement throughout the building(s). This position may require occasional transporting such articles as file boxes and office equipment (i.e., chairs) or heavier materials with help from others, and/or transporting light objects frequently.
