Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a responsible supervisor to oversee a security shift, directing schedules and enforcing perimeter and internal security measures.

The role requires a high school diploma with supervisory experience; a related bachelor's may substitute; certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months is required, along with eight weeks of basic training on hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with supervisory experience required.
• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training must be completed upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Schedules, directs, and manages the employment and duty activities of a security shift.
• Supervises, inspects and ensures proper perimeter and internal security and control measures are in effect and enforced.
• Prepares, submits, and monitors reports required by the chain of command and policy.
• Direct and redirects security resource for optimum security and safety.
• Ensure that institutional buildings and state property are properly secured.
• Trains, develops, instructs, evaluates and counsels subordinates to ensure duty performance is in accordance with state laws and agency policies.
• Ensures proper control, issue, and use of weapons, keys, security devices and agency equipment.
• Inspects all posts where shift employees are deployed. Interviews and counsels’ inmates as necessary to ensure maximum safety and security.
