Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a Custodian I to maintain cleanliness in school buildings and grounds. Training provided on tools, equipment and safety; may supervise other custodial staff. Responsibilities include cleaning restrooms, classrooms, gym, cafeteria, and setup for events.

Requirements include GED or some high school; preferred high school diploma and custodial experience. Regular attendance is essential; entry rate may vary with experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of effective cleaning techniques and routine maintenance.
• Ability to learn and use cleaning machines/equipment.
• Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
• Ability to plan and supervise other custodians when needed.

Responsibilities

• Secure building and take out trash; clean bathrooms, hallways, classrooms and gym.
• mop and buff halls; clean cafeteria after activities.
• Change lights; restock paper towels and toilet paper.
• Dust and clean desks, chalkboards and fixtures; empty trashcans.
• Supervise Custodian I's occasionally; set up/clear chairs for events.
• Replace lights daily inside/outside school building; assist when staff are out.
• Respond to emergencies and work in inclement weather as needed.
