Job summary

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services is seeking a Nurse Shift Supervisor (2nd Shift) at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute in Virginia. This role leads nursing operations for a 24/7 facility, overseeing up to 95 staff and ensuring high-quality patient care on adult and geriatric units.

The position requires a Virginia RN license (or eligibility), a valid driver's license, and prior nursing management experience.

Qualifications

Licensed RN in good standing in Virginia or license-eligible.
Valid driver’s license required and must remain valid.
Experience in nursing management and/or Shift Administrator roles.
Extensive psychiatric nursing experience.

Responsibilities

Supervise and schedule nursing staff with efficiency and effectiveness.
Direct and coordinate medical and health services during the shift.
Respond to emergency codes and oversee admissions and discharges on the shift.
Oversee staffing and scheduling needs for the shift and staff call-ins.
Assist with nursing staff development and performance feedback.
Manage electronic health records, scheduling/timekeeping systems, and reporting.
Provide leadership during emergencies and clinical crises.
Make decisions with appropriate consultation.
Maintain quality patient care and compliance with accrediting standards (TJC, CMS, OIG).
Foster multidisciplinary collaboration and patient safety across units.
Ensure infection prevention and control practices are implemented daily.
