A Lead Process Engineer interacts with plant engineering and operations & maintenance departments to identify improvement opportunities, as well as the business and marketing teams for growth projects. This position develops engineering design deliverables for new products or processes that will sustain and grow the business. This position ensures that the process engineering standards and procedures are met during the development, design, and construction phases of a project and works to improve these processes in parallel.
A successful engineer in this position will be able to:

- Develop and design process design deliverables for capital projects meeting safety, cost, and schedule expectations.
- Identify design alternatives including non-capital solutions through clear understanding on problem statements.

- Gain consensus for project decisions and manage ambiguity, uncertainties and risk through effective communication.
- Collaborate strongly with other engineering disciplines and functional areas (e.g., finance, operations, supply chain, business development).
- Actively drive projects forward through organized objectives, planning, and accountability.
- Be self-motivated and goal-oriented with proven success working independently and in a multi-functional team environment.
- Apply root cause analysis to test designs and develop controls to anticipate problems or prevent reoccurrences.
- Actively innovate and implement solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) process design packages for capital projects as part of FEL (Front End Loading) and CPMP (Capital Project Management Process).
- Develop engineering design deliverables including Heat and Material Balances, process simulations, Process Flow Diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, process equipment sizing and specification development.
- Scale up laboratory and pilot scale technologies to commercialization scale.
- Conduct technical or financial risk assessments.
- Perform detailed peer reviews of process designs for content and quality.
- Support Process Hazard Analysis and implement recommendations.
- Support capital project engineers through detailed design, vendor selection, equipment purchases, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Become a subject matter expert on specific processes or unit operations.
- Lead work teams to identify and implement productivity and efficiency improvements.
- Identify and implement process improvements, aiming for safety, higher yields, better production rates, and higher attainment.
- Improve control schemes and advanced process control strategies.
- Develop process economics, feasibility studies, and project justifications.
- Assist plant operations in growth, cost savings, or stability projects.
- Ensure quality assurance of engineering calculations, process simulations, and drawings.
Basic Qualifications:
- BS in Engineering, Chemical preferred.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and communication skills.
- 5 - 15+ years of process engineering experience in chemical, petroleum, or industrial manufacturing environments.
Additional Qualifications:
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification.
- Experience designing and executing capital projects.
- Experience with process equipment design, selection, commissioning, and startup.
- Proficiency with process data historian software (e.g., Uniformance, OSI PI).
- Experience with Process Safety Management processes.
- Familiarity with DCS systems such as Experion, Foxboro, or DeltaV.
- Prior experience with water treatment and environmental compliance systems.
