Job summary

Garney is seeking a Lead Pipelayer to direct and participate in underground utility installations, including water, sewer and storm drainage. The role supports daily crew operations, ensures correct installation procedures, and maintains safety and quality standards on the job site.

The position requires 4+ years of underground utility or pipelaying experience and a lead/advanced pipelayer background. OSHA 10/30 certifications are preferred or obtainable on hire.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of underground utility or pipelaying experience is required.
  • 1+ year in a lead or advanced pipelayer role is preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification is preferred or obtainable upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the crew in trenching, laying, aligning, and joining pipes for utility installations
  • Interpret plans and blueprints to ensure correct pipe placement and grade
  • Inspect and ensure joints, fittings, and pipe bedding meet project specifications
  • Communicate daily goals and assignments to pipelayers and laborers
  • Operate or assist with equipment used for trenching, lifting, and backfilling
  • Monitor safety practices and compliance with trench protection and excavation standards
  • Report progress, material needs, and issues to the foreman or superintendent
  • Train and guide new or less experienced crew members

GARNEY

A Lead Pipelayer position is available at Garney. The Lead Pipelayer is responsible for directing and participating in the installation of underground utilities, including water, sewer, and storm drainage systems. This role supports daily crew operations, ensures correct installation procedures, and maintains safety and quality standards on the job site.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Lead the crew in trenching, laying, aligning, and joining pipes for utility installations
  • Interpret plans and blueprints to ensure correct pipe placement and grade
  • Inspect and ensure joints, fittings, and pipe bedding meet project specifications
  • Communicate daily goals and assignments to pipelayers and laborers

What We Are Looking For
  • Proficient in installing various pipe systems (RCP, PVC, ductile iron, HDPE)
  • Ability to read and follow construction drawings, grades, and laser setups
  • Strong knowledge of trench safety, pipe installation procedures, and backfill standards
  • Effective communication and leadership skills for coordinating small crews
  • Ability to problem‑solve field conditions and adjust as needed
  • High school diploma or GED – Preferred
  • 4+ years of experience in underground utility or pipelaying work – Required
  • 1+ year of experience in a lead or advanced pipelayer role – Preferred
  • OSHA 10 or 30 and trench safety certification – Preferred or obtainable upon hire
