Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer for its Power global practice in the Kansas City area. The role focuses on design and evaluation of mechanical systems for coal and natural gas-fired generation facilities, including front-end planning, final design, and construction administration.

Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills are essential to oversee projects and coordinate with clients and disciplines.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field; FE eligible.
• 7 years of mechanical experience; EPC project experience preferred.
• PE license is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to apply diverse knowledge to broad assignments.
• Experience with Arrow, Fathom, SmartPlant P&ID is a plus.
• Ability to devise new approaches to solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

• Develop cost opinions, work plans, and schedules with independent judgment.
• Provide leadership guidance to less experienced staff.
• Regularly meet and correspond with clients and outside personnel.
• Lead mechanical design projects related to natural gas and coal-fired facilities.
• Manage air quality control systems and effluent guidelines.
• Perform equipment sizing, hydraulic calculations, pump selection, and piping design.
• Prepare P&ID drawings and instrument location plans.
• Assess mechanical equipment condition and lifecycle costs.
• Oversee plumbing, pumping, and tank/vessel selections and sizing.
