Job summary
Northwestern University in Chicago, IL is seeking a journey-level Building Maintenance Engineer to operate, maintain, diagnose, repair and replace building infrastructure including HVAC, plumbing, steam systems, and temperature controls.
The role provides limited mentorship to staff, requires 3rd shift Sunday-Thursday 11 PM–7 AM, and demands adherence to safety rules, strong problem solving, and the ability to respond to irregularities after hours.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED or equivalent.
- Completion of accredited plumbing or HVAC service technician apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
- Five years field journeyman experience.
- Knowledge of OSHA, BOCA, NFPA codes and local regulations.
- Must be a member of Operating Engineers Local 399 or join after 90-day probation.
- Valid Illinois driver's license and University parking permit as required.
Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, diagnose, repair and replace HVAC, steam, hot water, refrigeration and related systems.
- Provide time/materials estimates and maintain records of work performed.
- Mentor coworkers and provide technical guidance.
- Be available to respond to irregularities during evenings and weekends for 24/7 coverage.
