Job summary

Columbia College Chicago is seeking an Operating Engineer (L399) to maintain and repair HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and MEP systems across the campus. The role requires troubleshooting building control systems, coordinating with vendors, and performing preventive maintenance.

The position supports fire safety, life safety systems, and on-call rotations. Strong knowledge of Chicago codes and building infrastructure is essential, with unionized Local 399 compensation and benefits.

Qualifications

• High School diploma and two years trade school education in heating and ventilating equipment and plumbing.
• Minimum 3 years' experience as an L399 Apprentice or 2 years' experience as a L399 Engineer.
• Knowledge of Chicago Building Code, NFPA, ASHRAE, OSHA a plus.
• EPA Universal certification.

Responsibilities

• Repair and maintain heating and cooling equipment, boilers, air handling systems, chillers and related equipment.
• Operate and troubleshoot life safety systems including fire alarm, sprinklers, generators and emergency systems.
• Perform mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) repairs and installations.
• Respond to emergency notifications and on-call rotations as needed.
• Review and update work orders in the 360 FAMIS system.
• Perform building rounds for safety and code compliance.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor carpentry tasks.
• Operate and maintain freight elevators.
