Primary Purpose Of Position

The State Library is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Lead Machine Technician to join our team. This position acts as the lead technician in the Machine Unit. It is responsible for ordering three models of digital talking book machines (DTBM) – DS1, DA1, and DA2 – as well as two models of braille eReaders – ZooMax (EBZ) and HumanWare (EBH) – from the National Library Service (NLS) and maintaining a ready inventory of these items for delivery to patrons.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Maintains and repairs three models of digital talking book machines (DTBM) – DS1, DA1, and DA2 – as well as two models of braille eReaders – ZooMax (EBZ) and HumanWare (EBH)
  • Maintains parts inventory, ordering supplies from the National Library Service (NLS)
  • Provides technical support for patrons regarding DA2 digital talking book machine and HumanWare braille eReader Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Troubleshooting of hardware, software and battery issues with these machines.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of machine accessories, batteries and spare parts to ensure smooth operation of repair and distribution of machines.
  • Primary telephone contact with NLS and the NLS Multi State Centers.
  • Receives shipments of machines, accessories and parts, verifying quantity and quality.
  • Coordinates small team of volunteers to help with machine maintenance and repairs.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the subject's own body with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing; viewing a computer monitor; extensive reading; visual inspections involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The position has significant telephone contact with National Library Service staff on supply and technical issues, and daily contact with the Machine Unit and other LBPH staff for general business purposes.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution.

AND

one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification.

OR

an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.

The State Library of North Carolina – Accessible Books and Library Services (SNLC–ABLS) provides library programs and services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to a visual, physical, or learning disability. The SLNC-ABLS is a part of the network of regional libraries operated by the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) that performs the functions of a public library. The library circulates 800,000 volumes annually to over 12,000+ eligible patrons through special deposit collections in libraries, hospitals, rest homes, and other institutions and the direct delivery of specially designed playback equipment and books and magazines in large print, Braille, and audio formats to individuals directly free of charge via U.S. Mail. The library manages a volunteer services program, records local North Carolina publications and magazines for circulation, publishes and distributes quarterly library newsletters, and sponsors reading and other library programs with support from the Friends of the SLNC-ABLS. SLNC-ABLS is committed to removing barriers to access and ensuring that collections and services reflect diverse perspectives.
