Job summary

City of Poway, within the Community Services Department, seeks a Senior Lifeguard to ensure public pool safety, supervise staff, and coordinate aquatics programs. The role includes lifeguarding, teaching Red Cross swim lessons, and maintaining facilities.

Qualifications

• Six months of lifeguarding experience.
• Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
• Possess and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
• Possess and maintain American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) certificate or EMS, or obtain within six months of hire.
• Possess and maintain Lifeguarding Instructor certificate or must obtain within six months of hire.
• Possess and maintain Water Safety Instructor certificate or must obtain within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Act as lifeguard during pool hours and at events.
• Instruct swim lessons in conjunction with the local American Red Cross unit; assess participants and advise class placements.
• Assist with training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating part-time staff and volunteers.
• Supervise staff during shifts in the absence of the manager or supervisor.
• Assist in developing aquatics programs and lessons.
• Recommend and purchase necessary equipment and supplies for events and pool maintenance.
• Maintain program records and prepare required reports.
• Evaluate emergencies and respond decisively to resolve the situation.
• Enforce City policies, rules, and procedures.
• Provide information to patrons in person and over the phone.
