Job summary

Alamance County Government is seeking a Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator Lead to manage advanced operation of heavy machinery at the landfill and guide daily field activities. The role emphasizes safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance while directing operators and laborers to optimize airspace and waste placement.

The position requires 5 years of heavy equipment experience, leadership ability, and knowledge of landfill operations, safety practices, and environmental rules.

Qualifications

• 5 years of heavy equipment operation experience, preferably in a landfill or earthwork setting.
• Demonstrated ability to lead crews or act as a lead worker.
• Knowledge of landfill operations, safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
• Ability to read grade stakes and site plans and follow layouts.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate landfill equipment including compactors, dozers, excavators, loaders, and dump trucks.
• Lead daily activities for equipment operators; provide direction and training.
• Coordinate waste placement, compaction patterns, and cover procedures to maximize airspace.
• Inspect equipment and work area; report issues promptly.
• Assist with grading, drainage, and site road maintenance.
• Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and cleaning of equipment.
• Monitor waste loads for prohibited materials and communicate with scale house as needed.
• Support environmental compliance including litter control, stormwater, erosion, and dust mitigation.
• Communicate staffing needs and operational improvements to the supervisor.
• Serve as acting lead on the working face to improve safety and productivity.
• Assist with special projects such as cell construction, closure work, leachate maintenance, or storm response.
