Job summary

The American Red Cross in Baltimore is seeking an IRL supervisor to manage daily operations of the reference laboratory and supervise staff performing both basic and advanced tests to determine donor/recipient compatibility.

You will advise technologists, provide reference services to hospitals, ensure quality control, and oversee compliance with state and federal regulations. The role emphasizes leadership, patient-focused care, and collaboration with the Medical Director.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a biological or related field with SBB (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of high complexity blood bank testing experience or equivalent.
• One year of management experience or training is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

• Consult and communicate with hospitals and transfusion facilities to resolve serological problems and supply antigen-negative units.
• Supervise laboratory staff including hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and disciplining as needed.
• Provide guidance with Medical Director to ensure appropriate patient care.
• Ensure testing quality, reference and consultation services meet regulatory standards.
• May perform and interpret donor/patient testing and manage quality controls and paperwork.
