Job summary

The American Red Cross in Baltimore is seeking an IRL supervisor to lead daily reference laboratory operations, supervise staff, and ensure donor/recipient testing quality.

You will provide complex reference and consultation services to hospitals, guide the lab with the Medical Director, and maintain compliance with all relevant regulations while delivering outstanding customer service.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a biological or related field and SBB (ASCP) equivalent required.
• State license may be required where applicable.
• Minimum 5 years of high complexity blood bank testing experience or equivalent.
• One year of management experience or training.
• Strong communication and leadership skills; customer-focused.

Responsibilities

• Consult and communicate with hospitals and transfusion facilities to resolve serological problems and supply antigen-negative units to transfusion recipients.
• Supervise laboratory staff including hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and disciplining.
• In conjunction with the Medical Director, provide guidance to ensure appropriate patient care.
• Assure quality and adequacy of testing, reference and consultation services are maintained.
• May perform and interpret donor and/or patient testing procedures and complete quality control per regulations.
• Perform, review and approve quality control on products, reagents, and equipment and validations.
• Know and oversee compliance of applicable federal, state and local policies and regulations for blood banking and safety.
• May manage budgetary information for the department and approve reagent and supply purchases.
• Participate in inspections/audits and corrective actions; perform other related duties.
