Job summary

City of Columbia in Columbia, SC seeks a skilled mechanic to perform heavy equipment repairs on diesel and gasoline trucks and other equipment, ensure safety and reliability, and perform preventive maintenance.

The role includes supervising lower-level staff, assigning workload, and coordinating repairs for emergency vehicles. Must have at least 7 years experience, a valid SC Class A license, and ASE certification preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Seven (7) years of relevant prior experience.
• Valid South Carolina Class A Driver’s License.
• Preference may be given to ASE Certified Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technicians.
• Possess a mechanic’s tool set.

Responsibilities

• Diagnoses and performs mechanical repair work on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment, including engines, fuel systems, electronic controls, electrical/brake/hydraulic/HVAC systems, drivetrains and differentials.
• Supervises and assigns workload to employees, ensures timely and quality work, and conducts evaluations.
• Repairs emergency services and law enforcement vehicles; installs and maintains specialized equipment on emergency vehicles as necessary.
• Performs preventive maintenance duties and road tests to ensure safety and proper function.
• Provides training and leadership to junior mechanics and assists in keeping the shop clean and orderly.
