Job summary

AstraZeneca plc in Durham, NC, seeks an Associate Principal Scientist in Formulation and Process Design to balance formulation development and process engineering with a passion for digital tools in solid dosage product development.

In this role you will lead lab-scale formulation and process development, shape technical direction, and drive CPP definition while integrating modelling, simulations and digital twins to accelerate late-stage development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or Pharmaceutical Sciences and 5–10 years of relevant industrial experience.
• Experience in oral solid dose development.
• Experience in late-stage product development, technology transfer, scale-up and process validation.
• Strong interest in applying modelling and simulation to transfer projects.
• Fundamental understanding of control strategy and risk management.
• Basic understanding of predictive science and AI in modelling.

Responsibilities

• Lead formulation input for robust oral solid dosage form development.
• Plan and execute lab-scale experiments to support project decisions.
• Shape the scientific and technical direction of product development through formulation and process design.
• Define and optimize critical process parameters and integrate into control strategies.
• Lead or contribute to technology transfer, risk assessment, and scale-up.
• Apply modelling, simulation, digital twins and predictive tools to enhance understanding.
• Solve key technical challenges impacting project delivery.
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams on drug product development plans.
• Drive digital transformation within Formulation & Process Design (FPD).
• Establish strong relationships with Modelling & Simulation and other Global Product Development teams.
