Job summary

The City of San Luis is seeking a Lead Mechanic to oversee the maintenance and repair of municipal vehicles and heavy equipment. You will inspect, service, and prioritize repairs, lead a team of mechanics, and ensure safe, compliant operations in a busy fleet environment.

Responsibilities include diagnosing complex issues, supervising staff, maintaining records, and coordinating parts inventory, with an emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent and four years of journey-level automotive/heavy equipment mechanic work.
• Arizona Commercial Driver’s License Class B or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
• EPA Section 609 Certification and Forklift Certification.

Responsibilities

• Perform inspection, servicing, and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.
• Lead and supervise mechanics; coordinate scheduling and workload.
• Diagnose, repair engines, transmissions, brakes, air conditioning, and related systems.
• Repair heavy equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, fire trucks, graders, forklifts, and sanitation trucks.
• Maintain maintenance records and service schedules using fleet management software.
• Order, receive, and store replacement parts.
• Ensure hazardous materials are handled, stored, and disposed of per safety requirements.
• Provide on-the-job training and develop staff.
