An established power generation organization is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer to support the refurbishment, controls modernization, and redeployment of gas turbine generating units for data center and industrial power applications.
This role will lead controls engineering activities involving turbine control systems, generator interfaces, and balance-of-plant automation. The ideal candidate brings extensive gas turbine controls experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to lead technical reviews, define upgrade strategies, and support projects through testing and commissioning. Experience with GE Mark control systems is highly preferred.
Lead assessments of existing turbine control systems, including GE Mark IV, Mark V, Mark VI, and Mark VIe platforms, and define upgrade or replacement requirements.
Establish controls engineering scope for instrumentation, input/output (I/O), human-machine interfaces (HMI), and system configuration.
Specify and review turbine controls, balance-of-plant distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and HMI systems.
Develop and review control narratives, alarm and trip lists, and startup, shutdown, and load-control sequences in coordination with systems engineering.
Review fuel and combustion control requirements, including dry low NOx (DLN) tuning, turbine protection inputs, overspeed protection, flame detection, and vibration monitoring.
Define instrumentation requirements and review instrument datasheets, loop drawings, and related engineering documentation.
Coordinate controls integration with excitation systems, generator protection, switchyard equipment, plant control systems, and customer SCADA.
Establish control network requirements and support industrial control system cybersecurity considerations.
Lead or participate in factory acceptance testing, loop checks, commissioning, and controls tuning.
Troubleshoot turbine trips and control system issues, lead root-cause investigations, and recommend corrective actions.
Provide technical direction and guidance to engineers and coordinate controls activities with electrical engineering, systems engineering, project management, and operations.
Develop repeatable engineering standards, documentation, and controls upgrade approaches across multiple generating units.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
7+ years of gas turbine or power plant controls engineering experience.
Hands-on experience configuring, troubleshooting, and supporting turbine control systems.
Experience with DCS, PLCs, HMI platforms, and power plant instrumentation.
Commissioning experience on gas turbine or power generation projects.
Ability to interpret and develop control narratives, technical specifications, instrumentation documentation, and test procedures.
Strong technical communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional coordination skills.
Ability to lead technical activities, establish engineering priorities, and support project execution.
Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa support.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50%.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with GE Mark V, Mark VI, or Mark VIe turbine controls and ToolboxST.
Familiarity with Woodward, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Emerson Ovation, Honeywell, or ABB control platforms.
Experience with Bently Nevada vibration monitoring systems.
Knowledge of industrial control system cybersecurity standards, including ISA/IEC 62443 and NERC CIP.
Experience leading controls upgrades, commissioning activities, and technical troubleshooting on gas turbine generating equipment.
During the first 90 days, the Lead Controls Engineer will be expected to:
Assess the control system platform, software version, condition, and upgrade requirements for assigned generating units.
Develop and evaluate controls modernization options for different turbine frames.
Establish standardized I/O lists, control narrative templates, and supporting engineering documentation.
Identify controls integration risks and define technical requirements for testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
Competitive compensation and benefits based on experience.
