An established power generation organization is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to support the refurbishment, conversion, and redeployment of industrial heavy-duty and aeroderivative gas turbines for data center and industrial power applications.
This role will lead mechanical engineering activities involving turbine inspections, component evaluations, repair-versus-replacement decisions, and refurbishment planning. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience evaluating gas turbine components, interpreting OEM technical documentation, and developing engineering recommendations that balance equipment reliability, remaining service life, cost, and schedule.
Experience with any major gas turbine manufacturer is welcome. Experience with a specific OEM platform is not required.
Lead technical reviews of gas turbine teardown and inspection findings, including borescope inspections, nondestructive testing (NDT), dimensional inspections, and metallurgical evaluations.
Evaluate and disposition turbine components as serviceable, repairable, or requiring replacement based on OEM manuals, service bulletins, and repair-vendor criteria.
Review life-limited parts and component histories, including fired hours, starts, trips, repair records, and back-to-birth documentation.
Identify documentation gaps and technical risks that could affect equipment serviceability, asset value, warranty, or remaining useful life.
Develop and review refurbishment workscopes and repair-vendor quotations for compressors, combustion systems, hot gas path components, rotors, and casings.
Evaluate repair-versus-replacement options based on cost, expected component life, reliability, and project schedule.
Witness inspections, repairs, and testing at repair facilities and project sites.
Prepare detailed inspection reports with photographs, findings, engineering conclusions, and recommended corrective actions.
Lead or support root-cause investigations involving turbine blades, nozzles, combustion hardware, bearings, rotors, and other critical components.
Coordinate metallurgical laboratory evaluations and review technical findings to determine appropriate corrective actions.
Prepare mechanical specifications and review vendor submittals for gas turbine packages and balance-of-plant equipment, including lubrication systems, fuel gas systems, inlet and exhaust systems, cooling systems, water or steam injection, and emissions-control equipment.
Support technical due diligence for gas turbine assets through records reviews, condition assessments, and remaining-life evaluations.
Provide technical guidance to operations teams during installation, maintenance, and commissioning.
Coordinate with operations, systems engineering, electrical and controls engineering, repair vendors, and project teams to resolve technical issues and establish equipment acceptance criteria.
Develop standardized inspection procedures, component disposition guidelines, and engineering documentation to support consistent fleet-wide practices.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
10+ years of gas turbine mechanical engineering experience involving industrial heavy-duty and/or aeroderivative turbines.
Background with a gas turbine OEM, repair facility, utility, independent power producer (IPP), or owner's engineering organization.
Hands-on experience evaluating gas turbine components and making technical repair, replacement, or serviceability recommendations based on inspection findings.
Experience with hot gas path and combustion components.
Working knowledge of nondestructive testing methods, coatings, and turbine component repair processes, including weld repair, brazing, recoating, and blending.
Ability to interpret OEM manuals, service bulletins, technical instructions, engineering drawings, and inspection reports.
Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to document findings, engineering dispositions, and recommended corrective actions.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical evaluations and coordinate with repair vendors and cross-functional engineering teams.
Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa support.
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 50%.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with one or more gas turbine OEM platforms, including GE, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Solar, Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, Ansaldo, or Alstom.
OEM field service or repair-vendor engineering experience.
Familiarity with formal root-cause analysis methodologies.
During the first 90 days, the Lead Mechanical Engineer will be expected to:
Review outstanding inspection findings and component dispositions for gas turbine units undergoing refurbishment.
Establish or improve life-limited parts tracking and component history records for assigned units.
Develop standardized inspection report and component disposition templates.
Identify critical component risks and establish clear technical recommendations for repairs, replacements, and equipment acceptance.
Base salary of $140,000-$200,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Annual bonus target of 15-20%.
Sign-on bonus of $10,000-$30,000.
Remote work within the United States, with travel to repair facilities and project sites.
