A growing power generation organization is seeking a Director of Electrical & Controls Engineering to lead electrical and controls engineering for gas turbine power plants serving data centers and industrial customers. This position will oversee generator engineering, medium-voltage power distribution, protection systems, utility interconnection, and plant controls.
This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for establishing engineering standards, managing a team of electrical and controls engineers, overseeing technical specifications, and supporting equipment refurbishment, integration, and commissioning. The position is remote, with travel of up to 30% to generator and switchgear facilities and project sites.
Lead electrical and controls engineering for gas turbine power generation systems, including generators, transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, generator circuit breakers, grounding, and auxiliary power.
Establish electrical design standards covering generator ratings, fault duty, bus configurations, and integration with data center and industrial loads.
Oversee generator engineering requirements for inspections, rewinding, 50/60 Hz conversions, excitation systems, and refurbishment compliance.
Direct power system studies, including short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash, load flow, and motor starting.
Review and approve protective relay settings and manage engineering consultants performing power system studies.
Lead utility interconnection engineering, including utility and ISO requirements, interconnection studies, applications, and behind-the-meter and islanded operating configurations.
Oversee controls engineering, including GE Mark V/VI/VIe upgrades, balance-of-plant DCS, excitation and fuel controls, and cybersecurity requirements.
Support commissioning activities, troubleshoot electrical and controls issues, and provide technical guidance on root cause analysis and warranty-related findings.
Develop electrical and controls specifications, review vendor submittals, and ensure technical compliance.
Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of electrical and controls engineers while communicating technical risks to executives, customers, and project stakeholders.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
15+ years of power generation experience, including at least 5 years leading engineering teams or projects.
Extensive experience with generator engineering, medium-voltage electrical systems, and protection for utility-scale or industrial power generation.
Experience directing power system studies and supporting electrical and controls commissioning.
Demonstrated ability to establish engineering standards, evaluate technical risks, and lead complex projects.
Strong communication and leadership skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to executive and customer audiences.
Authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa support.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering.
Gas turbine controls and DCS experience.
Experience with GE Mark V, Mark VI, or Mark VIe control systems.
Utility interconnection experience involving ERCOT or other independent system operators.
Familiarity with NERC requirements, including PRC and CIP standards, as applicable.
Experience with ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or similar power system analysis software.
Experience with generator refurbishment, excitation systems, and 50/60 Hz conversion projects.
During the first 90 days, the Director will establish standardized electrical design criteria for generator frames, review generator condition and refurbishment compliance, and define controls upgrade strategies for the applicable equipment.
Competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with experience.
