Job summary

Upstart is hiring a Principal Data Scientist to join our Product & Growth Analytics team. You will partner with product, marketing, finance, and ML leaders to optimize decisions and build forecasting, spend allocation, marketing incrementality, and attribution tools.

You’ll design causal analyses, own experiments end-to-end, and translate complex signals into actionable business insights that guide strategy and investment. Remote-friendly role across US teams.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in data science or quantitative roles with product impact.
• Demonstrated mastery of experimental design and A/B testing.
• Deep statistical expertise, including causal inference methods.
• Strong coding skills and ability to translate data to decisions.
• Proven ability to partner with non-technical stakeholders.
• Comfort in ambiguous environments and shaping direction through inquiry.
• Excellent communication, translating technical work into clear narratives.
• Exposure to ML applications and collaboration with ML teams.
• Familiarity with personalization or matching algorithms.

Responsibilities

• Shape strategic direction by identifying gaps and questions others miss.
• Be a thought partner to leaders across product, finance, and ML.
• Design, build, and own tools used across the team (forecasting, spend allocation, attribution).
• Design and execute experiments, from A/B tests to causal analyses.
• Build metrics frameworks and measurement strategies for stakeholders.
• Collaborate with ML to address high-complexity challenges with rigor.
• Translate ambiguous business problems into clear frameworks for decisions.
• Own work end-to-end from scoping to storytelling and driving change.
• Influence without direct authority across teams to create alignment.
