Job summary

San Diego State University is seeking a Lead Custodian to provide lead direction to custodial staff and support daily cleaning and maintenance of campus facilities. The role includes coordinating work assignments, monitoring quality and safety, training staff, and performing hands-on custodial work to keep the SDSU campus clean and welcoming.

The position is full-time, non-exempt, with evening and weekend hours on-site.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to 1–2 years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others
• Knowledge of custodial methods, chemicals, and equipment
• Knowledge of safety and sanitation practices in custodial work
• Knowledge of lead/supervisory practices and techniques

Responsibilities

• Provide lead direction to 10–30 custodial staff, assign work, monitor progress, and inspect quality
• Train staff on equipment, cleaning procedures, safety practices, and emergency protocols
• Maintain employee time records and assist with evaluations
• Perform custodial cleaning of classrooms, labs, offices, restrooms, and other spaces
• Complete floor care, surface cleaning, trash removal, and supply replenishment
• Assist with minor equipment repairs and ensure cleanliness standards
• Provide porter service campus-wide
• Respond to urgent calls, bio cleanup, floods, etc.
