Job summary

San José State University is seeking a Lead Custodian to mentor a group of custodians across campus facilities, including residence halls and administrative spaces. The role emphasizes safe methods, training, and coordination of daily cleaning tasks, schedules, and reports.

The incumbent will oversee performance, inspect work, manage time records, and coordinate recycling/trash programs while ensuring high standards of cleanliness and safety in a multi-building environment.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience with on-the-job leadership.
• Must possess a valid California Driver's License for operation of any vehicle or equipment.
• Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate Residential Facilities Trash and Recycling Needs.
• Provide daily custodial service during summer season for quick facility turnaround.
• Maintain appearance and cleanliness of residential facilities.
• Operate motorized custodial equipment.
• Perform housekeeping duties and clean common area bathrooms.
• Train staff in equipment use and custodial practices safely.
• Coordinate major aspects of the university housing recycling/trash program.
• Assign, review and inspect work of staff; maintain time records and evaluations.
• Plan and schedule personnel and work assignments; use computer for reports.
• Mentor custodians and provide guidance on responsibilities and techniques.
• Serve on-call for emergencies when needed.
