Job description

Summary

The Fredericksburg VA Health Care System has an immediate opening for one GS-0644-12 Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service, Hematology division.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • English Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English (38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)).
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Certification: Must meet one of the following options:
  • (a) Generalist certification as an MLS by ASCP BOC or AMT.
  • (b) Generalist certification as an MT by ASCP BOR or AMT.
  • (c) Categorical or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT.

Exceptions for Non-Certified Applicants:

  • Hired candidates without current certification may work towards certification and are eligible for temporary appointments under specific conditions.

Grade Determinations:

  • One year of creditable experience at GS-11 or equivalent is required for GS-12.

Assignment:

  • Independently manages daily laboratory operations, develops and evaluates procedures, performs quality control, and interprets laboratory data across various specialties.
  • Responsibilities include troubleshooting, quality assurance, staff training, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Wide-ranging knowledge of medical technology and laboratory practices.
  • Skills in troubleshooting and repairing laboratory instrumentation.
  • Ability to develop and modify testing procedures.
  • Leadership in managing daily activities and staff development.
  • Guidance to clinical staff on technical aspects and test results.

Additional Duties:

  • Communicating organizational goals, problem-solving, reporting, and coordinating laboratory operations.
  • May act as liaison to other departments and oversee staff competency assessments and training.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting, carrying, use of fingers, fine manipulation, walking, standing, sitting, near vision, depth perception, and color discrimination.
