Job summary

The University of Iowa is seeking a Central Service Technician III for the 1st shift in Iowa City. This full-time on-site role operates Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM within the Turn Center at the Medical Center.

You will lead sterile processing activities, ensure instrument readiness for surgical procedures, and participate in training, quality assurance, and inventory management across the department. Strong attention to detail and certifications are essential.

Qualifications

• Verified experience with or documented completion of a medical terminology course.
• High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in the physical and natural sciences and mathematics.
• Must possess and maintain certification from CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
• Four years of related experience in a medical field with sterile processing.
• Three years in sterile processing and one year in a supervision role, or
• Three years in a medical field with sterile processing and one year of college coursework.

Responsibilities

• Lead technician and provide expertise on sterile instrument preparation for medical/surgical use; assign duties and ensure shift completion.
• Monitors productivity and ensures QA tasks are performed.
• Direct training and document trainee progress in guides.
• Decontaminates, inspects, cleans, and assembles instrument trays; operates scope and washer equipment.
• Interprets manufacturer specs for care/handling; assesses instrument cleanliness and function.
• Performs sterilization, packaging inspection, safety procedures, and proper documentation.
• Assembles instrument trays per cards within required timeframes; handles emergencies and high call volume for items.
• Manages inventory of instruments and supplies; maintains records and reports.
• Performs biological monitoring of sterilizers; conducts challenge tests and preventative maintenance.
• Recommends improvements to production, equipment performance, and safety; serves as hospital resource on sterilization.
• Advises staff on policies pertaining to sterilization and sterile products.
• Participates in department/division committees and projects; plans for future shift needs.
• Maintains departmental policies and quality/infection control standards.
