Job summary

Johnson County Government’s Planning, Housing and Community Development Department seeks a Plans Examiner/Chief Building Inspector to review building plans and supervise inspections for compliance with adopted codes. You will coordinate with county, state, and federal agencies to issue permits and ensure safety standards are met.

The role requires strong organization, knowledge of International codes, and the ability to communicate results clearly to design professionals and contractors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
• Five years of experience in architecture, engineering, and/or construction management.
• Five years of experience in building and fire codes; experience may substitute for degree.

Responsibilities

• Performs comprehensive plan reviews for commercial, industrial, and residential permits to ensure code compliance.
• Conducts field inspections for construction projects across structural, mechanical, electrical, and life-safety codes.
• Collaborates with designers, contractors, and agencies to resolve code interpretation and approval issues.
• Acts as on-call plan examiner responding to permit and code questions.
• Maintains plan review and inspection records and communicates results to applicants.
