Job summary

Johnson County Kansas Planning, Housing and Community Development Department seeks a Plans Examiner/Chief Building Inspector to review complex building plans and supervise inspections. You will ensure compliance with adopted codes, coordinate with fire districts, and communicate findings to designers and contractors.

The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work with multiple agencies to issue permits efficiently.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
• 5 years of experience in architecture, engineering, and/or construction management.
• 5 years of experience in building and fire codes.
• Experience may substitute for degree; education may be substituted for experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs comprehensive plan review for commercial, industrial, and residential permit design documents to ensure code compliance.
• Conducts field inspections for construction projects and ensures life safety and code compliance.
• Interprets codes, communicates results to applicants, and coordinates with other agencies.
• Acts as on-call plan examiner to respond to inquiries and walk-ins regarding permits and codes.
