Job summary

T. Rowe Price Labs’ AI Engineering team seeks a Lead Software Engineer to architect and deliver complex production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems. You will lead incubation of new AI products, drive experimentation, and partner with technology teams to scale adoption across the firm.

This hands-on leadership role requires deep software and AI engineering expertise, mentoring engineers, and shaping technical direction. Hybrid work with opportunities across NYC or Harbor Point, Baltimore.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
• Hands-on software engineering experience in object-oriented languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Deep hands-on experience designing and delivering AI-enabled systems or intelligent workflows.
• Strong expertise in AI engineering patterns: agent orchestration, tool/function calling, retrieval-based systems, evaluation, observability, guardrails, failure handling.
• Experience architecting production AI systems and trade-offs across model capability, latency, cost, reliability, security.
• Extensive experience with cloud-native solutions, containers, APIs, and modern delivery practices.
• Strong communication and leadership to guide engineers and set standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, design, development, deployment, and evolution of complex production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems.
• Set technical direction for AI solutions, balancing models, latency, cost, security, and maintainability.
• Lead teams through ambiguous AI problems from experimentation to production adoption and scale.
• Define and evolve engineering standards for production AI, including testing, observability, guardrails, and safety controls.
• Guide development of reusable AI capabilities and shared platform components across agent orchestration and retrieval-based systems.
• Evaluate emerging models/frameworks and provide direction on adoption.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to engineers.
• Lead code reviews and resolve complex engineering challenges across teams.
