CITGO Petroleum Corporation is seeking a Process Safety Engineer Intern to assist in implementing and maintaining PSM systems, working with Business Unit engineers to improve standards and procedures. The role communicates critical PSM/RMP information to the HSSE Department and supports hazard analyses and PHA programs.

The internship is available Spring, Summer or Fall 2027, and requires enrollment in ABET-accredited programs with 3.0+ GPA and a valid driver’s license. TWIC eligibility is noted.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, Fire Protection Engineering, or Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology.
• Must have completed 30 semester hours in the topics above.
• Overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in hazard analyses (HazOp/LOPA/what-if) and contribute to PHA processes.
• Support development and administration of the refinery’s PSM programs.
• Participate in incident investigations and lessons learned.
• Provide technical support to process safety teams and initiatives.
• Help establish leading indicator metrics and MOC processes.

Job Summary

A Process Safety Engineer Intern may be assigned to assist in implementing and maintaining systems to reduce risk to diminish or remove hazards. The Process Safety Engineer Intern actively works with Business Unit engineers in their designated operating areas to implement, update, improve PSM systems and processes, standards, and procedures, and communicates critical PSM/RMP-related performance information to the HSSE Department.

Minimum Qualifications

• Full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program.
• Must have completed 30 semester hours in the topics above.
• Overall GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration. Candidates selected for employment must obtain a TWIC card.

• Assist with facilitating various forms of hazard analysis including Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOp), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), what-if, and what-if checklist methods.
• Assist with the PHA Program and the life cycle for the PHA process.
• Development of interim risk reduction strategies for high-consequence scenarios.
• Participate in HSE meetings.
• Interact regularly and frequently with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering at assigned areas to build rapport and to be aware of, and assist with resolving, process safety issues.
• Develop and deliver training on process safety management and related topics. Advise on the interpretation and application of internal and external standards.
• Participate in incident investigations, review cause maps, and ensure post-incident lessons learned and incident prevention strategies are implemented.
• Provide technical support to the facility’s process safety teams as well as associated process safety programs and their initiatives.
• Identify and establish leading indicator metrics that are tracked, trended, and used in a way to identify areas of concerns, improvement programs, address risk/ hazards and ultimately eliminate incidents.
• Develop expertise in administering the refinery Management of Change (MOC) program and working closely with site MOC Champion for continuous improvement.
• Perform training, lead team meetings, compose and deliver presentations to various groups at all levels of the organization.
